Books PhotoReading Thoughts

Portrait of a Legend, Spitfire

Whilst working with the Texas Instruments computer distributor Saudi Computer Services in Saudi Arabia, I discovered the joy of reading, from fiction, the books of Wilbur Smith, Ken Follett, Jack Higgins, the classics of Charles Dickens, great titles of The Wizard of OZ, Alice Through the Looking-Glass, to technical books, from the Idiots Guides range, the Introducing range, to books on specific subjects about my chosen fields of work on NLP, Hypnosis, Memory.

I joy of reading was further enhanced by learning PhotoReading, being able to absorb 20,000 – 30,000 WPM.

After PhotoReading a book, then reading word for word, line by line made so much difference, it gives me the desire the urge to want to read the book.

So it was with the two books I purchased at Heathrow airport a couple of trips ago, well there was a special offer, “two books for the price of one“.

The first book was by the BBC‘s Top Gear program presenter, James May. This was a typical impulse buy, the author’s name caught my attention, the cover looked good, and there was a special offer. The title also attracted me, “James May’s Magnificent Machines“, with a sub title of “How men in sheds have changed our lives“.

The book told me little I did not know, it referred a couple of times to how inventors in the past often worked in small back rooms or sheds, with little or no facilities, for example Marconi the pioneer of radio, Reginald J Mitchell designer of the winner of the air race in the 1930’s, the Schneider Cup, and from that the development into the great wartime plane, the Supermarine Spitfire.

One thing which got me going whilst reading James May’s book, was that he talked about how the French car manufacturer Citroën, “pioneered some ideas touted as new by other manufacturers at the end of the 20th century, and he states “the styling was, and still is, fabulous in the real sense of the word (which is why it appears on the cover).” I have looked long and hard Mr May, and found no picture of Citroën car.

The second “free” book was titled Portrait of a Legend Spitfire, by Leo McKinstry. This is a book about the great Second World War aircraft, the Spitfire.

The latest world air races sponsored by Red Bull, has something that captures peoples imagination, the speed the sound, the thrills. So it is with the mighty Spitfire, with the purring and throbbing Rolls Royce Merlin engines (see pictures click here), the curves of the fuselage, sleek and smooth, the thin curved elliptical wings.

This well researched book by McKinstry, calls on written works from many sources, quoting from all sides, from all involved in the Spitfires design, production, management, to those that flew the Spitfire in its’ various variants, models or marks, to those that fought against it.

McKinstry gives all the warts, the bad bits about the aircraft, the politicians, Neville Chamberlain, Winston Churchill, Lord Beaverbrook, the manufacturers, Lord Nufffied, R J Mitchell, the military leaders like Sir Hugh Dowding, Sir Leigh-Mallory, pilots, Douglas Bader, as well as the good things about the Spitfire.

The book gave me not only a new in depth look at the Supermarine Spitfire, but also a new look at the history of the period, of the social climate, of how people pulled or did not pull together at a time of war. It showed me that those I had held in such high esteem, often made bad decisions, but without them, this world would be a different place to the one we know today.

Portrait of a Legend Spitfire is an enthusiasts book, and I have always been a Spitfire lover.

A loss of another friend

One thing is certain, we will all take the same journey one day, and today I had news that another great friend and NLP‘er has passed away.

Many people will have been helped by this great man, who assisted for many years at the Society of NLP trainings held in London with Paul McKenna, Michael Breen and Richard Bandler.

John Brown had been ill for some time, and sadly he passed away on Monday.

John helped me overcome my phobia of heights, as I wrote about just over a week ago in my blog about riding on the London Eye, and where my phobia had come from on a holiday with my family in the Welsh seaside town of Saundersford.

John was also known as a safe breaker, he was an engineer of note, and became an expert at being able to get into locked safes.

He was also an artist, and I treasure a painting he did of Dartmoor for me, it hangs in my bedroom, and will always be a reminder of him.

John, may you rest in peace.

Dolphins in the Bosphorus, Istanbul, Turkey

For a number of years I have been traveling to many countries to give courses, including Turkey.

Often, there is a requirement to cross the Bosphorus, the water that separates the European and Asian continents and the two sides of Istanbul.

It is only a twenty minutes ferry ride from Beşitaş to Kadıköy (Besitas to Kadikoy), and it is a time to relax, reflect on what has happened and will be happening, and view the sights of various sizes of ships, ferries and boats.

Many times I have spotted dolphins breaking the surface of the Bosphorus, and it surprises me that many Istanbul people have never seen them, and many do not believe I have, so watch the video.

I have two videos here, one is on YouTube and another on my server. I understand that I some countries YouTube is banned, and thus people have not been able to see the video. Please let me know if this is the case. Thank you.

Many Turkish people have said they have never seen dolphins in the Bosphorus linking the two parts of Istanbul, here are some.

The hottest day of the year?

It has been said today on the news that it will be the hottest day of the year in the UK, and I have missed some of it.
The Sun with a smile and sunglasses

Yes, I am back, in the UK, and I slept twelve hours, catching-up on sleep after a number of days of hard work, relaxation, fun, laughter in Turkey. The last weekend being a two day course on Stage Hypnosis. Come back soon to see picture.

Now my head is spinning through too much sleep, and I will have to get my body and mind back into shape.

I wonder if I will hear from the people who I have worked with now I have left an even hotter Turkey?

A visit with Vanessa

This week I was lucky to meet-up with my daughter Vanessa for a couple of days.

We did something I longed to do for a long time, in fact two things, one, to take a guided bus ride around London to see the sights, and two, go on the London Eye.

Although I think I have seen most of London, living and working in the area for some years, I have discovered what I know bit by bit, and perhaps, well I know, missed a lot.

I was well pleased with the quality of service provided by The Original London Transport Sightseeing Tour, which included a river Thames cruise to Greenwich, the place where East meets West, the Greenwich Meridian Line.

Another longing I wanted was to go on the London Eye sitting on the River Thames, the London Eye is a unique, rising high above London’s skyline at 135 metres. Creating the tallest observation wheel in the world.

Having had a great phobia of heights, which was taken away by a good friend and fellow NLPer, John Brown, but I had really never had a good challenge to test it out.

It worked.

Ladybirds the Answer

I wrote about some strange ladybirds (click to read) I came across outside the home here in Norbiton Hall.

After some research and people giving me information, I now know that these ladybirds are called Harlequin Ladybirds, part of the Coccinellidae family and they take the name Harmonia axyridis, the most invasive ladybird on Earth.

It appears that they can take-on many guises or patterns, and I have seen a few on the hedgerow outside the apartments, but when I go to get my camera, by the time I get back, they have gone.

The Harlequin emerges from the pupa, and leaves the shell behind as per the picture above with the Harlequin Ladybird without any spots.

The larva is such a strange insect, the likes I had never seen before.

These Harlequin ladybirds arrived in the UK only a few years ago, in 2004, and are spreading rapidly throughout the UK, including Scotland and Northern Ireland in 2007.

They are native of Eastern Asia, and were introduced into the rest of the world, as a biological control agent against aphid and scale infestations.

Although probably not introduced into the UK as a control, they may have found their way by hitching a ride on the new EuroStar train service from mainland Europe, through the Channel Tunnel or via the many cut flowers imported from Holland.

Concerns about the Harlequin Ladybirds are that they are more aggressive to the British native species, and being that they like buildings, people find their homes invaded.

A Weekend in Rome – Work

So I do not really do the tourist thing (click to read), but it was good to have a free morning on a weekends training. I can always make a metaphor from my experience of the Vatican and the Basilica, Saint Peter’s.

After a bite of lunch to eat with Elena Martelli my translator, it was back to the hotel to make sure I was happy with the room set-up. We had 28 participants to prepare for, and we wanted it right.

It is so satisfying to train willing people, those that who wish to learn and experiment.

We covered such areas of NLP as, the Meta Model, Anchors, Eye Accessing Cues, Chunking, Deep Structure – Surface Structure, The Map is not the Territory, Transderivational Search, and not forgetting Oh Poo Poo.

The group worked hard and had fun, as they put into practice the training.

For those participants that wish to review the NLP Meta Model structure in Italian, please click here.

Thank you all who attended. I cannot do my job without you.

Strange Creatures, Ladybirds

Today as I went back to my home in Norbiton Hall, Kingston upon Thames, I noticed in the hedge which borders onto the public pathway, some what we in the UK call “ladybirds“, an insect belonging to the scientific family Coccinellidae.

On closer inspection, they did not look correct. OK, they were red with black spots, but the usually shinny smooth shell covering the wings was dull and wrinkled, plus the head is not quite correct, there were not the usual white spots.

Are they the common ladybirds, could they be pupating? Do lady birds pupate?

Then I spotted other “bugs” which looked similar, but they were long and did not have the characteristic hard shell. The backs looked like pineapples with triangular sections and hair.

What is going on here? Help please.

Is the bug attacking the ladybird?

After some research and feedback, I have an answer, see the article Ladybirds the Answer.

NLP Perceptual Positions

In my previous article (click) I wrote about a doctor on an NLP course, and it was a few days into the course that she came to me asking me to work with her daughter. Asked why, the doctor said that her daughter was going wild, she was not the nice girl she once was.

I needed to know a little more. How old was her daughter? 16. Does her daughter believe she was going wild? No? Who else is involved? Her father and school friends.

As in the article, it was Virginia Satir that broke from the conventional beliefs that the “problem child” should be treated, and that it is the group, the family that should be seen as a whole.

I agreed to see the daughter on the understanding I saw the mother as well, both in this case in separate sessions.

The the exercise Perceptual Positions, in NLP, the client is asked to suspend their own understanding of their reality of the world, to see things from others point of view. They are told that they will be moving around the room they are working in.

Ask the client to imagine a circle in front of them. Known as the First Position. The NLP Practitioner should draw the circle with their foot in front of the client.

This circle when they step inside it will be them. Known as the First Person.

Ask the client to imagine the situation where there is confrontation, the problem, and step inside the 1st circle, First Position, seeing through their own eyes, hearing with their own ears, feeling the feelings as they experience that situation, looking at the person they have the confrontation with.

The NLP Practitioner should draw a second circle in front of the client, Second Position and ask the client to imagine that the person in that circle, the person they have the confrontation with, the Second Person. Ask them to notice what it is like.

Once they have experienced that, ask them to step out of the first circle, that circle that represents themselves.

Now ask the client to imagine that they can become the person they have the confrontation with, Second Person, step inside the second circle, Second Position, the circle the NLP Practitioner drew on the floor, leaving an imaginary themselves in the first circle, First Position.

Once in the second circle, fully as the second person, the client should look back at the first circle, and imagine the other them, the First Person, standing there, and notice as they look through the Second Persons eyes, hearing with their ears, feeling those feelings as they experience that situation.

Notice what could change in the First Person to ease the situation.

Once the client has experience the confrontation from the Second Persons perspective, the client should be asked the to step out of the second circle.

The client should be shown a third circle, Third Position.

The third circle will contain a person known to the First and Second person, maybe also involved. This in the example of the girl and the mother, the third person could be the father.

The client should be asked to step inside the third circle, and imagine fully becoming that Third Person, seeing through their eyes, hearing with their ears, feeling the feelings as they experience that situation.

Notice how the confrontation looks and what could change in the First Person to ease the situation.

Once the client has experience the confrontation from the Third Persons perspective, the client should be asked the to step out of the third circle.

The client should be shown a forth circle, Forth Position.

The forth circle will contain a person unknown to the first and second person, perhaps a Martian, becoming the Forth Person.

The client should be asked to step inside the forth circle, and imagine fully becoming that Forth Person, seeing through their eyes, hearing with their ears, feeling the feelings as they experience that situation.

Notice the whole confrontation and what could change in the First Person to ease the situation.

Once the client has experience the confrontation from the forth persons perspective, the client should be asked the to step out of the forth circle.

The client should be asked to make the changes in the First Person, and step into the first circle, and seeing things from that perspective. Notice what happens with the image of the Second Person.

Step out of the first circle and into the second, and see things from the Second Persons perspective, noticing any more changes needed.

Step outside the second circle and into the third circle and become that person, seeing the situation from their perspective.

Once done, step into the forth circle and become that person, again noticing any changes needed.

The client should be asked to continue going around the circles until the situation has changed.

A Weekend in Rome – St. Peter’s Basilica

The inside of St. Peter’s, the basilica of the Vatican, is full of monuments, statues and works of art.

Outside is just as imposing.

The view from the outside does not in my view quite match the splendor that awaits the visitor on the inside of St. Peter.

Guarding the Pope and the Vatican is the Papal Swiss Army. This mercenary stems back to 1506 guarding the Popes, and they have been found to be loyal and have a good reputation for discipline. The Corps of th Pontifical Swiss Guard are the last of the units which has served Kings, courts and states for hundreds of years.

Rather than being of Italian citizenship the Swiss Guard must be Catholic by religion, single males and be a Swiss Citizen, from the Swiss military between the ages of 19 and 30.
