The joy of flying.

The joy of flying. Yesterday I flew from Milan to London with Alitalia.

The flight to London was due to leave 16 minutes ago, but we are just sitting here, on an extremely hot aircraft, for what we have been told another thirty minutes, due they say to traffic congestion.

After what seemed an age, we left the aircraft stand, only to kept in a holding area at the end of the runway. But not for too long, the engines picked up, and we soon sped down the tarmac runway. The force from the engine thrust the plane accelerating to take-off speed, at which point my seat reclining mechanism decided not to support me, and I found myself in a fully reclined position. It was very uncomfortable, (seat 14L AZ0230 9/5/07 if Alitalia should read this), and now I can appreciate the announcement by the flight attendants to put the seat in an upright position for takeoff and landing.

Not long after getting into the air flying over the beautiful Alps, food was served. This time not in a box, but on a tray. Still a sandwich, with I think some kind of omelet inside. Also with the sandwich was a jam tart, the pastry thick and hard, interesting taste that satisfied my hunger.

Flying above the Alps and clouds with Alitalia   Same old food that we used to get on Alitalia, now just a couple of biscuits

Let’s hope my case arrives at Heathrow on the same flight as me.

Well my case arrived, but we had to wait a long time before they came tumbling down onto the conveyor belt, which meant that my taxi driver had to wait even longer for me and thus charged me waiting time.

Oh I love flying.

Monday an early start.

Monday 7/5/07.

An early morning start, at 4am to catch the 6am Alitalia flight to Milan.

Food on board Alitalia seems always to be a sandwich, a cold drink, (I like the red orange juice), plus a piece of cake and yogurt, all in a green box. A choice of tea or coffee is offered, but weak tea and powdered milk.

There never seems to be any other food available other than the sandwich with a thin sliver of nondescript meat with a spread of cream cheese I think. At least with the no-thrills airlines, like Iceland Express, easyJet and Ryan Air there is a choice, firstly of having food or not, (if you want food you pay for it), plus there is a choice of food available, and served with a smile.

I was determined to take a photograph of this offering to put here on the blog, but for the first time I was told not to use a digital camera whilst in flight, I have not heard of that rule except during take off and landing. Perhaps the flight attendant had had too early a start like me.

Some service people like to make up the rules as they go.

Because of changes in course requirements in Turkey, I decided to change my flight dates. My ticket allowed changes, but only with the airline itself. I rang the airline to be told that there were no available seats for my desired flight, which was one week away. This could be true, and when I asked for flights the same day and the previous day, there were still no seats. I contacted my travel agent, (James at the Flight Center, Kingston), and asked them to check availability. There were seats available on all flights.

The saying if at first you do not succeed try, try again.

This is true with the airline in question. I was told it is always best to try until you get what you wanted.

I waited a couple of hours until the customer service representative would be going home or in a better mood, and tried again.

“Yes sir, that is done. Is there anything else I can help you with?” another helpful assistant replied.

My faith in the airline was restored until I had this sandwich for breakfast.

Summer and Winter Handbags

I came across some useful or useless information recently, according to your requirements.

I did not know that there are seasons for handbags, summer handbags and winter handbags.

For me the only people who use handbags are women, and the use for a handbag has been lost with the passage of time, except that they seem to be a depository for everything I personally do not have a use for, or a focal point to dance around.

I have noticed that there are small handbag and large handbags. Handbags so small they would only carry a tissue, and then they would not close. Handbags so large they should be classified as suitcases, when used by people onboard aircraft, they take-up all the space in the overhead locker leaving no room for my small computer case and coat.

Apparently, winter handbags are of thicker materials and are darker in colour, whereas summer ones are light materials, possibly clothe, light colours often with flower patterns. Are the thicker winter handbags that way to keep the contents warm, like we would put extra layers of clothing on?

Handbags are a fashion statement, they go with the clothes the woman wears, like I would wear black shoes with a dark suit, and brown shoes with a brown suit. I wear whatever shoes are by the door, are clean and comfortable.

I was told it is like me wearing winter suits and summers suits, winter shirts and summer shirts. What are they talking about, I only have one suit, and I have had that for years. And, as regards to shirts, if it is washed and ironed I will wear it.

I have two pictures to “clarify” what are winter handbags and what are summer handbags.

Really? I am still confused.

Someone help me out here please.

NLP Now – Cheese and Onion Sandwich

The 4th Duke of Sandwich, an 18th century English aristocrat, has much to answer for, whether the name sandwich is attributed to his name because he played the card game cribbage for hours on end, and did not wish to dirty the playing cards because he had eaten meat with his bare hands, or because he wanted to eat whilst working long hours at his desk.

I like a sandwich sometimes, especially the deep filled ones with lots of content, they are convenient to carry when wrapped up, they keep fresh when wrapped in cling-film, they are easy to handle, and are not messy.

The sandwich is not a British institution of course, it would be presumptuous of me to think so, in fact the sandwich goes back to the time people started travelling and wanted to take food with them. There is mention for example of Hillel the elder, an ancient Jewish sage, putting lamb meat (Pashal) and herbs inside flat bread, or the Egyptians feeding their slaves matzos (sandwiches) perhaps as they built the pyramids, the Romans calling the meal “cibus Hilleli” or Hillel’s Snack.

The sandwich is worldwide. I found out that the fillings probably are not.

I will make the  sandwich the night before. I take the loaf of bread from the freezer, yes I freeze the loaf when I buy it, as each slice is quick to defrost when needed, and the loaf stays fresh for weeks as I only take out what I need. I create my sandwich, wrap it in cling-film, and the morning you can relax as it has already been made.

I made a favourite sandwich of mine a cheese and onion. I prefer Cheddar cheese and a freshly cut onion. Later I gave one of my sandwiches to a Turkish friend who said

“WHAT!!! ONIONS IN A SANDWICH!!!!” He must want me to stink all day!!

promptly took the onions out throwing them away into a bin.

My filters of what is right and wrong are influenced by my filters, my culture, my beliefs, my upbringing, my understandings of the world, my likes and dislikes. (See NLP Now – Transderivational Search)

When having wine with a meal, convention states that you drink red wine with meat, and white wine with fish. I like wine, I do not drink much as I get drunk too easy, and I especially like white wine, therefore I will drink white wine with all meals.

I like hot chocolate drinks. Often when I go out for a meal after a course with colleagues or participants, and the waiter takes the order for the food then asks what I would like to drink, I will ask for a hot chocolate, with the meal. One of my translators in Turkey, Halil, thinks I am insane, how can I do that, Donatella Stefanini who was an assistant at my last PhotoReading course in Milan, felt the same way as I drank my thick hot chocolate with my meal in New York New York buffet near the Central Station.

Yet again Donatella and other people on a NLP Practitioner course I was running in Rome thought how strange it was that I had chips, (British chips, not French Fries), with my pizza. I happen to like chips.

The Chinese love noddles, I travel to China and Malaysia a lot, and have to eat noodles. The way they eat noodles with chopsticks is to suck them up with the mouth, allowing any unused to fall back onto the plate. Lots of slurping.

Donatella whilst I was in Rome, invited me to a friends restaurant for a special spaghetti meal. When the meal was placed before me I instinctively eat like I would in China or Malaysia, until I heard a strong voice from across the table, “Phillip, don’t do that.”

Note :- A noodle includes all varieties from all origins, whereas Pasta refers specifically to Italian style noodle products such as spaghetti, penne, fettuccie or liguine. They are the same.

We all have our filters our understandings of the world.

Perhaps you have a different cat in the tree. (see Peter and the Wolf).

We have to learn that other people have theirs.

Skype and Dualphone 3088 – Follow Up

Since my troubles with Skype and the Dualphone 3088 blog (click here to read), I have some good news.

I persevered with trying to solve the connection, not finding the base unit problems, and eventually the base unit found the internet through the router. I kept the handset and the base unit switched off for a couple of days.

Since then the Dualphone 3088 has performed well, allowing access to free communication to other Skype users around the world, and I consider some of the cheapest international calls available.

Now I would recommend this unit with the latest software download.

A sorting-out day

Today has been the sort of day you sort things out.

Today I have booked my flights to Bangalore, so that I can deliver a PhotoReading course, I have organised the paperwork and course materials.

Today I had to cancel my trip to China to meet many business people there. I am very disappointed on this.

Today I have arranged my next visit to Italy next week, to review our next courses and future plans.

Today I have been trying to sort out my web sites. I have tried to find out how to allow customers to download from the web site the CD track of The Castle, the hypnotic trance that everyone loves. What software sites on the web site so the customer clicks on a button, and then the software asks where do they wish to save the file too, and once the save key is hit, one can see the progress of the download.

Today I need help on this quest. How do you do it?

If you know, please let me know.

Today has been a sort off doing day.

Relax with views from the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames

Summer is really here, but it is only April in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames.

I have put together some scenes of my home town in the UK to some music.

The camera is only a very old Olympus digital C-170, 4.0 megapixel with video facility.

Enjoy.

Turkey, a proud people.

As I have previously stated, the Turkish people are very proud of their founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk (click), their country and their freedom.

At the moment there are protests over the perceived potential loss of the secular society, where although a predominately Muslim country, all religions are respected and allowed, and religion is kept out of politics. State and religion are kept separate.

Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, the architect of Turkey’s EU membership, said he would stand as the ruling AK Party’s candidate for head of state. Many Turkish people are worried by his Islamist past and the fact his wife wears the Muslim headscarf, banned by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in universities and public offices. They fear she will wear it as a first lady. They are worried that perhaps thier country may become like other Middle Eastern countries.

It is said that perhaps 1.2 million people took to the streets of Istanbul in protest, flying their country’s flag in a mass of red.

I met a friend

Today I met an old friend who poured his heart out to me. I did not feel it was my place to advise or offer my thoughts on the subject as we are quite close.

Colin is a kind man, and is always there to help others, often putting others before himself. This often leads to him being used, because people know he will be there for them.

He had been asked to help a colleague with some task at work, and although Colin had his own work to do, and he had promised friends outside the workplace and after working hours to meet for a social gathering, he saw how important it was for his work colleague to get the task completed on time. So he agreed, delaying and even canceling his own jobs.

When he went to help his colleague at his desk, he found that there had been nothing prepared, no paperwork, the office was in a mess, nothing was ready. He looked at his colleague’s fellow workers, and they were laughing and joking about something that had happened that day, and his colleague was taking part in the laughter.

When Colin prompted his colleague that is was getting late and they should start the task, the colleague told him to relax, join in the fun, the task did not really need to be done now, it could wait.

Colin said he saw red, he could feel his state change to one of anger, fury. But he held his state, (Mustapha, Fred, Antonio), knowing that he had not been able to do his own work, with the implication that perhaps his employers would blame him for being late and would probably not give him promotion or a salary increase. He saw his own friends in his mind’s eye getting ready to go out to enjoy themselves, and he was stuck where he was.

Colin told me that this was not the first time this situation had happened to him.

I know what I felt deep inside my own feelings, but was I right to put my thoughts on to Colin.

Tell me what you would have told Colin please.

No it is not a holiday

Well what I thought was a Bank Holiday in Italy last Monday was not a holiday. It was Wednesday.

Apparently the Italian Liberation Day falls on the same date every year, and that becomes the bank holiday or day off. If it is a Sunday, they have no holiday.

In Turkey they say it Children’s Day or “National Sovereignty and Children’s Day” in Turkish, 23 Nisan Ulusal Egemenlik ve Çocuk Bayramı, it commemorates the opening of Turkish National Assembly in 1920 during the Turkish War of Independence. The name of Children’s Day came in 1929 recommended by the Institution of Children’s Protection.

Whatever, I was working in Milan on the PhotoReading course. A really great course, which I will write about later.

Better still, Elena Martelli, my translator, took me for the pizza and Jack Frost ice cream.
